watchOS 11: Apple Removes Apple Watch Face in an Unexpected Decision

Published on June 19, 2024

The Apple Watch has an extensive range of faces, now exceeding 50, with exciting additions arriving frequently. The recent standout is the Pride Radiance face, introduced in May alongside the vibrant new Pride Edition Braided Solo Loop. As Apple introduces new features, it also occasionally retires old ones.

With the launch of watchOS 11 this fall, one particular Watch face will be removed. According to Zac Hall at 9to5Mac, the Siri Watch face is set to be retired. While Apple could potentially reverse this decision, it seems highly unlikely.

This appears to be the first instance of Apple removing a Watch face, in contrast to the numerous ones that have been added. I counted 63 Watch faces on Apple’s list, excluding the new Pride Radiance. Not all faces are available for every Apple Watch model or watchOS version.

Why is the Siri face being discontinued?

Apple describes the Siri face as a display providing timely and helpful information, such as upcoming appointments, traffic updates, or sunset times, with the ability to tap for more details. Users can turn the Digital Crown to scroll through their day or press it to return to the watch face.

The Siri face is being phased out

Does this description remind you of anything else? Last year, Apple introduced the Smart Stack for Apple Watch. On any Watch face except one, users can turn the Digital Crown to scroll through widgets displaying information like appointments and weather.

Essentially, the Smart Stack performs the same functions as the Siri face. Notably, the only Watch face incompatible with this feature is the Siri face itself.

The enhanced Smart Stack in watchOS 11

The double-tap mechanic, introduced in watchOS 10 for Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, also doesn’t work with the Siri face. This manoeuvre, allowing users to launch the Smart Stack one-handed, is a slick addition.

With watchOS 11, Apple has promised an even smarter Smart Stack. Thankfully, it wasn’t named “Smarter Stack.” Widgets will appear based on time, location, and other factors, such as displaying the Shazam widget when music is detected nearby.

The new OS will also auto-launch the Smart Stack during Live Activities or when music is playing.

Farewell, Siri Watch face. Long live the enhanced Smart Stack.
