Netflix Announces “First-of-its-Kind” Partnership for Grand Theft Auto 6

Published on July 23, 2026

More than a decade after the release of the previous game, and following several release-date delays, Grand Theft Auto 6 is finally due to launch in November. As if the hype wasn’t already huge enough, Rockstar Games has now announced “a first-of-its-kind partnership” with Netflix.

For GTA fans who have spent years analysing trailers frame by frame, hunting for map clues and debating exactly how Rockstar plans to push its open-world formula forward, the partnership promises another major moment in the long road to launch.

The streaming giant will premiere Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look later this month, on 27 August, giving fans exactly that — an extended look at the highly anticipated game.

And considering just how carefully Rockstar has controlled the flow of GTA 6 information so far, an extended presentation has the potential to offer one of the clearest pictures yet of what players will actually be doing when they finally arrive in the game’s new version of Vice City.

What will the GTA 6 extended look actually show?

We don’t yet know how long the presentation will be, or how much attention it will give to the main storyline compared with the side content that, as GTA fans know, is often where much of the fun lies.

That uncertainty may only add to the excitement.

A substantial showcase could potentially offer a closer look at the game’s world, missions, characters and open-world activities, along with the systems that make a Rockstar sandbox feel alive. For a series where simply driving around, stumbling into unexpected situations and ignoring the main story for hours can be as memorable as completing a major mission, those smaller details will matter enormously.

Fans will also inevitably be watching for any indication of how GTA 6 builds on the freedom and environmental detail seen in Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar’s worlds have become increasingly dense and reactive over the years, meaning even brief gameplay footage is likely to provide plenty for the community to dissect.

What we do know is that it will begin at 8pm UK time, 9pm or 10pm across European time zones, 12pm to 3pm across North American time zones, and 3am to 5am across Asian and Oceanic time zones.

For anyone who isn’t a Netflix subscriber, the extended look will be released on YouTube and the official GTA website just six hours after its Netflix premiere.

That short exclusivity window means Netflix members will get the first opportunity to see whatever Rockstar has prepared, but the wider GTA community won’t have to wait particularly long before the footage becomes available everywhere else.

Given the scale of the GTA fanbase, those six hours are still likely to be packed with screenshots, theories and discussions about virtually every detail shown.

A very different kind of game reveal

The Netflix premiere also marks an unusual approach for a major video game showcase.

Traditionally, Rockstar has relied on its own trailers, website updates and social channels to reveal new information about its biggest games. Putting an extended GTA 6 presentation on Netflix gives the reveal the feel of a major entertainment premiere rather than a conventional gaming showcase.

That arguably fits the position Grand Theft Auto now occupies. GTA releases are not simply major gaming launches; they have become enormous pop-culture events capable of attracting attention well beyond people who regularly follow games.

Netflix and Rockstar already have history

Netflix and Rockstar already have a longstanding relationship. Remastered versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas were previously made available to Netflix subscribers at no additional cost, while Red Dead Redemption is currently available to subscribers.

Those releases have given Netflix a foothold in Rockstar’s catalogue while the streaming service continues to expand its presence in gaming.

The new GTA 6 collaboration, however, takes that relationship into very different territory. Instead of simply offering existing Rockstar games through its service, Netflix is becoming part of the promotional build-up surrounding one of the most anticipated new releases in the industry.

Rockstar Games

The official Tudum page says “you still have plenty of time to replay some of the classic GTA games” between the GTA 6 extended look and the game’s November launch, so perhaps the trilogy could return to Netflix for subscribers as part of the tie-in.

Nothing has been confirmed on that front, but the wording will certainly give fans another reason to watch Netflix’s gaming catalogue as GTA 6 approaches.

Bringing those older games back would also be suitably timed. Revisiting GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas ahead of the new release would offer a reminder of just how dramatically Rockstar’s open worlds have evolved — particularly with GTA 6 taking the series back to Vice City and its surrounding setting.

GTA reveals have become events of their own

Netflix’s VP of nonfiction series Brandon Riegg said: “Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto 6is unprecedented, and we’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first.

“It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”

It is difficult to argue with the idea that a new GTA reveal has become an event in itself.

Every new trailer offers another opportunity for fans to investigate the world Rockstar has created, from vehicles and locations to NPC behaviour, businesses, activities and tiny environmental details that could hint at much larger gameplay systems.

For many players, that may be the biggest appeal of An Extended Look. GTA 6’s broad premise is already enormously anticipated, but the real questions now concern how everything fits together once the player is actually let loose in the world.

How dense will the map feel? How much can players interact with? What kinds of distractions will pull them away from missions? And how far has Rockstar pushed the open-world systems that have defined the series for decades?

The 27 August presentation may finally start answering some of those questions.

The countdown to GTA 6 is getting serious

Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November.

After such a long wait, the extended look therefore arrives at a crucial point in the build-up to release.

At this stage, fans no longer need convincing that GTA 6 is a major event. What they want are details — the mechanics, activities, characters and unexpected touches that will define the dozens, or potentially hundreds, of hours they spend inside Rockstar’s latest open world.

If Netflix and Rockstar are genuinely preparing an in-depth look rather than another conventional trailer, 27 August could provide exactly that.

And with only a matter of months separating the presentation from the game’s November launch, every new detail should make the wait for GTA 6 feel both considerably more exciting and considerably more difficult.
