Covering an array of different subareas like natural language processing, machine learning, AI, computer systems and networking, computer science is a broad field that centres around the study of computers and computational systems.

All around the world today, computers play an integral role in virtually every aspect of daily life, driving innovation in business, entertainment, education, engineering and the sciences and providing solutions to complex challenges of all kinds. Relying on various coding procedures, mathematical algorithms and their expert programming skills, computer scientists study computer processes, enabling them to develop new software and systems.

There are countless ways that computer science is used today. One area where the field has had a huge impact is in the realm of AI, leveraging computational power to enable machines to perform complex tasks that were traditionally the remit of humans. AI has already been embraced by a wide range of industries, having transformed practices and systems operating in the healthcare, automotive and retail sectors in particular.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the number of computer-related occupations will grow by 14% between 2022 and 2032. This is a much faster rate than the average for all occupations, with a diverse range of industries – including healthcare, education, security, government and agriculture – investing in upgrading computer systems and infrastructure.

Focussing on the development and testing of software and systems, computer science involves working with data analysis and security, mathematical models and computational theory. Computer scientists define computational principles that form the backbone of all computer software.

Ranking among some of the highest paid positions globally today, computer science professionals also report high levels of job satisfaction. Most computer scientists have at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a corresponding field.

Computer science covers a range of different specialties, including network systems administration, computer programming, hardware engineering and software development. Many schools and universities operate internship programmes, enabling students to gain hands-on experience with leading companies to bolster their CV.

For computer scientists, principal areas of study and work include AI, security, computer systems and networks, human-computer interaction, database systems, numerical analysis, vision and graphics, programming languages, theory of computing, software engineering and bioinformatics. Common vocations for individuals with computer science degrees include data scientist, computer programmer, information technology specialist, database administrator, web developer, business intelligence analyst, systems engineer, software engineer, full-stack developer, network administrator, video game developer and chief information officer.

Learning to code and write computer programs is just one aspect of the field. Computer scientists analyse, design and develop the software and hardware required to solve problems in all kinds of business, scientific and social contexts.

As computers solve challenges in the real world, enriching people’s lives, the subject incorporates a significant human component. Due to the complexity and range of projects they take on, computer scientists need both technical knowledge and essential skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication and creativity. Successful computer scientists have an analytical mind and well-honed mathematical and technical skills, with a laser-sharp attention to detail and project management competencies.
