This is what GTA 5 looks like through an Oculus Rift. It was never going to take long for modders to bring VR support to Grand Theft Auto 5 on PC. The game doesn’t officially support the Oculus Rift (yet), but naturally people are finding ways around the problem.

The mod isn’t perfect – the headset merely replicates the mouse movement control – but we’ll take it.

GTA 5 doesn’t come with native support for the Oculus Rift but it can be played in VR using the new VorpX drivers which have just been released. So how is it?

Playing the game in VR was an interesting experience and somewhat sick-inducing. For research purposes I decided to persevere and fight through the motion sickness to put this video together which explains how it works.

Even with the new VorpX drivers installed, which come with GTA 5 support, the game was not that easy to get working perfectly. There was a lot of messing about to get the display to show on the DK2 which involved dragging the active GTA 5 window onto the headset and it wasn’t too happy about being moved. After a bit of trial and error I eventually got the game working pretty well with the correct resolution and controls.

The main issue was the sensitivity with the controls and mouse look. If you don’t get this right it can be quite a motion sickness-inducing experience. Driving was not easy because of the head tracking and separate key controls, with the head movements feeling over-sensitive compared to the actual car controls. With some tweaking of the mouse sensitivity in the options this should be rectifiable, although I did try various sensitivity settings and couldn’t quite get them exactly how I would want it.

GTA 5 works pretty well in VR – it certainly looks great and the level of detail on all the streets and objects is quite sharp considering the limitations of the Oculus Rift DK2. It’s by no means perfect but it’s as good as it’s going to get with the current Oculus tech.

Watch the video below, which was all shot in VR. Apologies for the terrible driving but there was no sickbag in the glove compartment in any of the cars. I did my best
