The Zoetrope, which was invented in the 1830s, is one of the earliest devices to show the illusion of motion. It comes in to the category of ‘pre-cinema’ devices.

A paper strip containing a series of images is placed inside a drum, which has a series of slits in it. Spin the drum, and look through the slits, and the series of images comes to life as an animated picture!

This toy zoetrope comes with 18 animation strips, 6 draw-your-own strips, and an instruction book that explains the history of the zoetrope, how this ‘movie machine’ works, and how to create your own animation strips.
