Despite its bad rap, the fanny pack is a proven problem solver for many carry systems. As I show in my ROL EDC Carry System. a well-chosen small fanny pack provides a compact and quick attachable way to carry a surprising amount of gear. Likewise it can be very viable option of pistol carry for police officers, military members, and licensed civilian sheepdogs. However theres a right way and wrong way to carry a gun in fanny pack. Breaking from conventional wisdom (standard), Nutnfancy recommends NOT using a ready-made gun fanny pack. That is because most models scream GUN as they are large, squarish, often made of leather, expensive, and bulky. Instead use a modified and high quality logo fanny pack that has been modified. Simple modifications include the sewing of Velcro inside the pack, inclusion of a custom cut heavy plastic backing (also with Velcro), and the attachment of an inside the pocket type holster appropriately sized for your gun. Many backpack makers make many good models of these logo fanny packs. These would include models from Mountainsmith (look for the excellent Vibe II model,) REI Lode, Eastpack, Pac Safe, Jansport, and Eagle Creek. Stay with streamlined fanny packs that ride close to the waist and ones that attach to the side if possible. Under an untucked shirt, a properly chosen logo pack will ride unobtrusively and will attract no attention. The logo pack is perfect camouflage. Downsides would include slower gun access that will need to be offset with practice. But overall it is a quick attachable and detachable way to always leave the house armed with something substantial, without altering your outfit. So are fanny packs just for German tourists in Florida? Hardly.
