UE Roll Bluetooth Speaker – Hands on Review and Dunk Test04:33

The Ultimate Ears (UE) Roll is a portable Bluetooth speaker that can get wet. Not just a splash, but a full on dunk in the swimming pool. And having an IPX7 rating is just a perk — this is a totally respectable portable Bluetooth speaker by every measure.

Above all else, the UE Roll is a speaker, so it needs to sound good. What UE has managed to coax from the Roll is impressive. You shouldn’t expect thumping bass from a small speaker, but the UE Roll pushes out a respectable amount of low end. As a replacement for the outstanding UE Mini Boom before, it provides a similar, if slightly more compact, sound signature.

The Roll is also remarkably resilient, with a high-impact enclosure, anti-skid silicone skin, and ultra-durable speaker grill. We literally kicked the speaker around the office for a while, and it survived the FIFA-style abuse no worse for the wear.

With the UE Roll app, you can pair two Rolls together, adjust the EQ, and use the volume and power controls. One unique feature is the alarm that, once set, will wake you up even if your smartphone isn’t paired to the speaker. Battery life is a respectable nine hours. For $99, UE’s Roll delivers a compelling combination of sound quality, utility and features.
