We place tungsten carbide inserts in shotgun shells to see how they impact mild steel. The inserts were embedded in wax. Tungsten carbide (50% tungsten/ 50% carbide) is a very hard and DENSE material (denser than mercury). These are used on a metal lathe as cutting tools.
We filmed this last summer and I did not think the results were very impressive so I never put this video together.
This is about as CLOSE as we can get to shooting either diamonds or mercury. As I have said many times, there is no way we could safely shoot a mercury slugs since it is a hazardous material. Yeah, it would be cool to see but we aren’t stupid either.
I would advise against duplicating this experiment.
