Toyota launched on May 18 the fully-remodeled third-generation Prius, which has its engine displacement increased from 1.5 liters to 1.8 liters. The new Prius is equipped with the Toyota Hybrid System II, a new hybrid system which includes a 1.8-liter engine, a motor and a reduction gear, more than 90% of which has been completely redesigned. The new hybrid system delivers a fuel efficiency of 38.0km/liter and driving performance on par with that offered with a larger 2.4-liter engine, through the synergy with improvement in energy efficiency and world-leading aerodynamic performance. The new Prius comes with four driving modes: the standard mode; the Eco-Drive mode which emphasizes fuel efficiency; the Power Mode allowing for more agile driving; and the Electric Vehicle Drive mode which uses just the electric motor for quiet cruising. The Eco-Drive monitor can display in real time the hybrid system indicator that shows acceleration and energy recovery conditions, one-minute or five-minute fuel efficiency rates, as well as a fuel efficiency history that shows average fuel efficiency and maximum fuel efficiency for the past five trips. The new Prius also features the solar ventilation system that uses power generated by solar panels installed on the sunroof to ventilate the vehicle interior, and the worlds first remote air conditioning system, enabling air conditioner operations from outside the vehicle using the Smart Key. The standard L grade model is priced at 2.05 million yen, and the high-end S grade, 2.2 million yen. Toyota, which launched the first-generation Prius as the worlds first mass-produced hybrid passenger car in 1997, has sold the Prius in more than 40 countries and regions including Japan and North America. The company plans to sell the third-generation model in more than 80 countries and regions.
