Tiling A Plane…04:33

Ever since the 17th Century, mathematicians have described the various ways that polygons can cover, or tile, a flat surface.

And the artist M C Escher produced tessellations where the shape of the tiles changed, e.g. from birds to fish.

These unusual and very complex pieces were designed by the British artist Robert Reid, and created using a 3D printer. Each pieces is identical, and they can be slotted together to form a complete plane, i.e. there are no spaces at all between the pieces.
