This Japanese Fork Disables Your Slurping Sounds

Published on January 14, 2018

This is the smart fork that stops slurps.

The Japanese love eating their noodles by slurping, but westerners can be offended by the sound. So noodle giant Nissin invented a noise-canceling fork. A built-in microphone detects the sound of a slurp, then sends sounds to a smartphone to disguise it.

The $130 fork is marketed as a way to bridge cultures and make Japan more tourist friendly. The idea is cute — but why can’t we just let the Japanese enjoy their ramen soup in peace?
