The World Is Ending: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, And The Rest Of The Zuck Empire Is DOWN

Published on October 4, 2021

Right after Facebook’s own Antigone Davis took to defending the company live on CNBC, the company’s website portfolio went totally dark. According to official reports on Twitter (lol) by Facebook’s communications head Andy Stone, the company is ‘aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.’

What they mean by ‘some people’ is ‘everyone in the world.’

If you take one look at Down Detector, your Twitter feed, or just about any other source, you will see that these problems are global, widespread, and currently unresolved. No one knows for sure exactly what is going on yet. The company’s DNS records are showing some sort of as-of-yet-unnamed issue. Dane Knecht, senior vice president of Cloudflare, said that Facebook’s border gateway protocol routes, which are its paths to literally traverse the internet, have been ‘withdrawn.’

Instagram.com is not showing a 404 not found error. Instead, it’s showing a 5xx Server Error message, which is a pretty ambiguous error message that basically means ‘something is broken.’ All Facebook has said so far is that ‘something went wrong.’ The problem seems to be affecting absolutely every aspect of Facebook’s business, including its VR division, Oculus. Oculus users are currently able to load games that they have already installed, but all communication features are down and you cannot install new games at the moment. The outage is also affecting Facebook’s internal workplace websites.

There is still no word from Facebook regarding what may be the root cause of the problem. We also have no idea when these sites and services will be back online.
