Citizen Technology Center, an affiliate of the Citizen Holdings, exhibited a prototype sunglasses featuring LCD lenses at CEATEC Japan 2007.

Engineers at the company succeeded in holding the lens thickness to under 400um by employing an innovative idea of using plastic film to interpose liquid crystal on the lens portion where glass is normally used. This manufacturing design significantly reduces the weight of the sunglasses.

In addition, light adjustment on the sunglasses can be turned on and off with a touch sensor operation on the frame part of the glasses.

At this point, Citizen Technology Center still has to tackle a couple of issues that include the slow response of the LCD film when it is touched and reducing the difference of the light transmittance.

Once Citizen Technology Center completes development, these next-generation sunglasses are sure to be a casual fashion hit this coming summer

The 2 other applications of flexible display exhibited at the booth include pastel colored LCD wristbands which come with light control adjustment and security cards for your ID card or cell phone screen to protect your privacy.
