Johnson Space Center is home to the nation’s astronaut corps and is responsible for preparing explorers from both the U.S. and its international partners for the demands of living and working in space. The first U.S. astronauts were selected in 1959.

ESA astronaut Pedro Duque was born on 14 March 1963 in Madrid, Spain. He enjoys diving, swimming and cycling. Pedro flew as a Mission Specialist on the Space Shuttle Discovery for STS-95 mission from 29 October to 7 November 1998. The nine-day mission was dedicated to research in weightlessness and solar studies. Pedro was responsible for the five ESA scientific facilities and for the computer system on the Space Shuttle.
