The armored slingshot catchbox

Published on September 3, 2017

The old catchbox was commissioned in April 2010 – now, 40 months and millions of hits later, it is beyond repair. The Slingshot Channel needed a new one!

This time, it is entirely made from wood. Without protection, it would be reduced to a small pile of splinters in a very short time. But fortunately, this box is completely clad in 1cm butyl rubber – virtually indestructible.

As this rubber type (the same that is used in car tyres) is not nearly as elastic as latex, the ricochets from its surface are harmless, they just roll off.

The same rubber material has been used to keep the balls inside of the box. The old catchbox needed cardboard for that job – which had to be replaced every 40 shots or so, Here, overlapping strips of butyl rubber are pushed aside by the incoming steel balls, and then the rubber curtain closes and the ball is kept inside.

The bottom plate of the box is installed at a steep angle, so the balls roll down through an exit hole – right into a drawer that is also armored by the butyl rubber.

A “The Slingshot Channel” production!
