Syria Joins Russia’s International Army Games During Six-Year-Long Civil War

Published on December 5, 2017

The third annual International Army Games will mostly be held in Russia this year, but boasts a few surprise guests. Despite its ongoing war and humanitarian crises, Syria will be among the 28 countries competing in this year’s competition.

The International Army Games are considered the military’s version of the Olympics and has competitions such as Suvorov Attack, Aviadarts, Safe Environment, Airborne Platoon, Clear Sky, and Gunsmith Master. They also have Artillery Fire and Sniper Frontier for the old-fashioned, and Sea Cup, which is presumably just as popular as the 200-meter butterfly.

Given that Syria is embroiled in a six-year war, it seems odd the country would waste any resources on military games. Nevertheless, the country will be making its International Army Games debut this summer. The competition goes from July 29 to Aug. 12.
