Tim demonstrates a number of toys that use the same mechanism – a piece of string with a weight at the end, that provides a kind of timing mechanism. Here we initially show a mass produced example of a toy using this mechanism, and we then show a number of craft toy versions that Tim has acquired over the years.
We believe that this mechanism was sometimes used in the Middle Ages as part of a clock escapement mechanism.
