If the word epic could be described as a “series of great achievements” then that description is appropriated for the Spyderco Sage series. Featuring different locking mechanisms from well known and respected knife makers, the Sage series showcase near perfect folding knife construction. Featured in this 3 for 1 Nutnfancy video review are the Sage 1 CF 123CF, Sage2 C123TI, and the Sage2 C123GBL. Weight on all three is a reasonable 3.5 oz or so and each features a beautifully shaped CPM S30V blade with an ideal tip (strong yet precise). Each blade came out of box with a wicked sharp edge with a near perfect relief grind. Ergonomics on these blades are excellent. Double finger choils on the bottom allow for perfect control and traction is high thanks to ideal jimping on both top and bottom of the blade. The hand locks into the Sage and this traction inspires confidence. It would allow for emergency defensive use in a pinch but mostly these are collectible or EDC blades (and a slammin’ gift idea!). The Sage1 shows the improved “twill woven” carbon fiber scales that are both beautiful and show improved traction over the previous slick “epoxy CF” Spyderco used. The Sage2 is elegant simplicity at its best with its shaped titanium scales and frame lock. Like the Sage1 its shows the preferred pillar construction that allows for lighter weight and ease of maintenance. On both, note the recessed screws, showing the attention to detail in their construction. The Sage1 with its Michael Walker liner lock shows solidness of lockup and features aggressive liner milling to save weight. The Sage2 and its RIL demonstrate the attractive and simple strength of a well-executed frame lock. The Sage3 is simply gorgeous and unique. Its bright sea blue G10 handle offers excellent grip and strking looks. The Blackie Collins bolt action lock here operates smoothly and should offer excellent durability. The stop pins are massive in all three Sage knives. Also the speed, balance, blade retention, blade centering, and solid lockup are flawless; no defects whatsoever are noted. The heated treated stainless steel spring clips are perfectly executed: they carry deep and unobtrusively, they’re light, clip firmly, and they’re resistent to bending. This is one of my favorite clip designs. Value is high considering the quality and reference prices and other knife options are discussed. All together the Sage series shows what I now call “epic knife features:” true design excellence in key elements that combine to make the knife a Hall of Famer in TNP. Epic indeed. ////////////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: Sage1 9 out of 10, Sage 2 9.5 out of 10, Sage3 9 out of 10
