The Taguchi Laboratory at the University of Electro-Communications has developed a skating robot that uses wheels to skate across flat surfaces and two legs to walk on a bumpy terrain that can not be traversed on wheels.

As its first attempt to develop such a robot, the laboratory developed the BSR-1 prototype inline skating robot with two legs in 2004.

Then in 2005, the laboratory developed technology that enabled the robot to change directions and also modified the robot by equipping it with a computer and power source so that it could travel wirelessly. The new version was called the “Modified BSR-1”.

In the future, the laboratory plans to develop a new robot that can skate on one leg and walk through rough terrain without using wheels.
