Explaining the physics of how a wax slug works and why it is able to do so much damage. We explain how a connection was made with granular impacts and how the impacts of wax slugs are actually granular impact — in reverse. I wanted to explain how these improvised rounds differentiate from a normal bullet or solid lead slug. Some of you may be interested in the science behind these unique rounds. I read a posting at AR15.com about someone’s shotgun blowing up from using wax slugs.
There is a lot of speculation about the cause. The shotgun was a Maveric (the econo-line from Mossberg). Some say he may have shot a squib (the primer didn’t ignite the powder, but caused a barrel obstruction) The user had modified the shell, replacing the wadding with one from a different brand of shell too.
