The Lee – Richards Annular Monoplane ( German about : ring-wing monoplane ) was constructed by the British Cedric Lee and George T. Richards experimental aircraft from the period before the First World War . The aircraft had the rare interpretation as a disk plane that but in the middle of a ring neck had , in which the crew and the aircraft engine were housed . The right name for it is not unique in the German language , so such aircraft Ringflügler , Kreisflügler or disc planes are called . In the trade magazine Flight , the Lee – Richards construction 1954 in retrospect as the ” original Flying Saucer ” was presented , which was presented before Winston Churchill and Lord French . [ 1 ]
