Even sports complexes can be recycled and reused.

Qatar recently unveiled a stadium made of modified shipping containers and other materials that can be quickly deconstructed and repackaged. As a result, the same stadium or several smaller ones can be constructed elsewhere.

In Qatar, the venue will have 40,000 seats and is expected to be completed in 2020. That’s a couple years ahead of the 2022 World Cup, which Qatar is hosting.

The country has been spending an estimated $500 million a week and has faced criticism over its preparations. There have been allegations surrounding corruption, labor and human rights abuses.

Perhaps this sustainable stadium, which Qatar says is the first of its kind in the World Cup, is a small step in a positive direction.
