Protesters Wear Masks And Costumes To Object To Austria’s ‘Burqa Ban’

Published on October 21, 2017

Even though it’s not Halloween, that’s not stopping these protesters in Austria from showing up in costume.

They’re fighting against a controversial Austrian law forbidding full-face coverings, including veils, such as the burqa or niqāb. Protesters donned clown, horse, and ninja masks as a show of support. Those who cover their face in public would be denied entry at Austrian border crossings and could face a fine of 150 euros, or $176.45.

Austrian protesters are calling the ban racist and unconstitutional. France and Belgium already enforce a “burqa ban,” with a similar measure currently going through the Dutch parliament.
