As you can see if you are shopping for foreign imported foods in China you are going to pay alot more then in your home country. Thats why so many people on their travels to China stack up. Bring your beef jerkeys, tuna, nature valley, cliff bars, etc Many of these prices are 3x plus here. Of course the main reason for the price hike is from the shipping and import taxes. I remember I saw a Breyers Icecream a couple months ago in this City Shop in Shanghai. It was 250rmb— thats like $42. A week later I went back to the USA and i saw it on sale at Ralphs for $4.99. Crazy uh? A bag of Doritos— $11.50. Also, cheese is crazy expensive here. I know people that load up on freakin cheese when they come back to China. Some even freeze steak and put it in a zip lock bag. And yea, its still frozen when it gets here. You figure that high altitude is freezing anyway. Ha

In any event this does not mean its really expensive to live in Shanghai. If you can eat Chinese food you can pay like $1.50 for a hot meal. Like here:

Also, you don’t need a car here. Subway, buses, taxes, etc are quite cheap and is very very convenient here. No car = no car payments, no insurance premiums, no registration fees, no maintenance costs, no tickets, etc, etc, etc…
