Potassium Permanganate and Glycerol (Glycerin) fire

Published on April 10, 2017

The reaction of potassium permanganate and glycerine.
Reagents: potassium permanganate (VII) KMnO4, glycerol C3H5 (OH) 3

Potassium permanganate oxidizes glycerol invisibly initially but with the passage of time increases the amount of heat generated until ignition occurs.

14KMnO4 + 4C3H5(OH)3 = 7Mn2O3 + 7K2CO3 + 5CO2 + 16H2O
