Patient Plays Saxophone While Surgeons Remove Brain Tumor

Brain surgery seems like an unconventional place to play some jazz. But that’s exactly what this music teacher did.

Dan Fabbio had brain surgery fully awake earlier this month, playing his saxophone the whole time. The music teacher had a brain tumor that could have impacted his playing, so doctors needed him to play during surgery to help isolate the location and make sure they didn’t damage the area.

While the practice seems unorthodox, it’s actually more common than you may think. There have been several examples of people playing instruments, such as the guitar, during brain surgery in the past.

Lucky for Fabbio, his surgery was a success. And he hasn’t stopped playing since.
