2016-04-22 – Watch the evolution of the “ozone hole” above the South Pole over 15 years, thanks to OSIRIS data! These weekly measurements, collected since 2001 from about September to March, show that the “ozone hole” continues to appear every year over the South Pole during the Antarctic spring, but it is no longer getting bigger.

Canada’s OSIRIS instrument collects valuable information on the ozone layer that shields life on Earth from most of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. It also detects aerosols and nitrogen dioxide in the atmosphere.

This data contributes to monitoring progress related to the United Nations Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (United Nations treaty). (Credits: Canadian Space Agency, University of Saskatchewan)
