Fifty-four years ago, three young U.S. Marines were entrusted with the solemn task of lowering the American flag at the U.S. Embassy in Havana for what they thought would be the last time.

On Friday, those three men returned to the same site after five decades to once again see the flag raised over the newly reopened embassy.

James Tracy, Mike East, and Larry Morris — all now in their 70s — stood at attention during the ceremony Friday morning and passed the flag to three active Marines.

The three men gazed skyward as the flag raised in front of U.S. and Cuban diplomats.
