Man Jailed Over Growing Marijuana For His Cancer-Stricken Wife

Published on November 27, 2017

An Indonesia man was recently sentenced to jail for growing medical marijuana to help his wife, who was battling cancer.

Shortly after Fidelis Arie Sudewarto’s arrest, his wife died, sparking both sympathy and outrage from activists.

Indonesian drug laws are among the world’s strictest. The government says it is facing a drug emergency, and the president has told the police to shoot drug dealers who resist arrest. The court said Sudewarto didn’t have a permit to use marijuana, and that he supplied it to another person. His family wants to appeal.

The father of two is being held in a jail on the island of Borneo. He will not be free for another eight months. He was also fined the equivalent of $75,000.
