Just 30 minutes drive south from San Diego is the legendary Mexican border town of Tijuana. Infamous for drug violence, immigration problems and donkey shows, TJ has another export that is known and loved around the world, Lucha Libre wrestling. At its core are the masked men who have entertained Mexicans for more than 150 years. They call themselves “Luchadores,” their iconic masks and personas draw on ancient Aztec traditions from and comic book superheroes of today.

In this two part series, Vocativ correspondent Jesse Aisenstat makes the journey south across the Mexican border, deep into the world of Lucha Libre. As he meets the men behind the masks he is surprised by the dedication of these professional athletes who sacrifice their bodies for the thrill of the crowd. Each match is like a Hollywood action film, with good guys and bad guys. But here, the blood and broken bones are very real.
