LGBT Flags At Mashrou’ Leila Concert Sparks Debate Across Egypt

Published on November 1, 2017

An LGBT rainbow flag held up at a concert in Egypt has set off a debate in the country regarding LGBT rights.

Mashrou’ Leila is a Lebanese indie band whose lead singer, Hamed Sinno, is openly gay. The band’s lyrics often touch on taboo topics in Arab and Islamic society. According to Egyptian media, seven concertgoers were arrested for “promoting homosexuality” and “inciting immorality”.

While homosexuality isn’t illegal in Egypt, authorities have used two older laws against prostitution and debauchery in order to crack down on the LGBT community. By raising the pride flag in such a public way, the concert has been able to inspire many in the country to call for greater freedom of expression in Egypt.

Rock on!
