ISSYS ( medical implantable devices)- Integrated Sensing Systems, Inc.,
or ISSYS, designs, develops, and manufactures products that use
microelectromechanical systems, better known as MEMS. MEMS are miniature
devices made with microfabrication technology. They can sense or
control an environment, such as knowing when to deploy airbags in a
car. Although the firm began with industrial applications, founder
Nadir Najafi now concentrates on bio-medical applications for their
products. ISSYS’s core technology uses a “dissolved wafer” process that
allows them to make pressure sensors small enough to fit into the eye
of a needle. Through a Small Business Innovation Research, or SBIR,
award from NASA’s Glenn Research Center, ISSYS is now developing
miniature sensors to test the physical effects of low gravity
environments. The implantable, batteryless and wireless sensors will be
used to measure blood flow. They’ll be powered and read by a hand-held
transceiver placed up to six inches away. And, ISSYS plans to develop a
medical application from this technology that can be used to help treat
heart disease.
