The Oculus VR Rift is an amazing device and after using it myself I can really understand how it’s going to change the future of gaming and possibly social networks.

I have literally been waiting forever to try one of these Oculus Rift DK1 units and lucky for me a co-worker had one that he could loan me to do a full review of. I have to say that it surprised me in lot of ways and let me down in others but overall the technology is solid and I can honestly see this easily becoming the future of gaming. The biggest drawback is obviously the resolution and blur and they have addressed both of those problems in the upcoming DK2 unit which I will also borrow from my friend Brian to do a review of. My biggest concern with it however is that the resolution is 1080p which still seems vastly inadequate for something like this that has to divide the resolution into two frames and then make it consume your entire field of view (FOV). I only hope that Oculus behind the scenes has their eyes on a 4k version because I think with that kind of resolution this actually would become highly viable and would bring the most realistic gaming experience possible.

The Oculus Rift uses two lenses in a ski mask-style head-mounted display that combine to form a 1280 x 800 display. Each eye sees 640 x 800 pixels and while that still sounds like a low resolution in 2013, you can’t judge the product on that single spec alone. The rest of the hardware simply consists of a break-out control box you use to plug the Rift into your computer; it features DVI, HDMI, micro-USB and power.
