If you unlock the iPhone, you can use it on the carrier of your choice- handy if you can’t get the carrier to unlock it or have bought it used.
In some countries– like the US, your carrier will often unlock the phone for you free if you bought it from them and have an account in good standing. But if you no longer have an account with that carrier, or have purchased a used phone, it’s often hard to get a phone unlocked, and that’s where unlocking services come in. Note that Verizon phones are unlocked as per an FCC requirement, but you must boot them once with a Verizon SIM before you can use the phone on other carriers.
