Several years ago, a small manufacturer in Cleveland, OH wanted to improve one of its thermal wire testing systems used for quality control and integrity testing of deep foundations.

By working with MAGNET (an Ohio Manufacturing Extension Program) and a NASA Regional Economic Development (RED) partner, Pile Dynamics, Inc. participated in an event that matches small- and mid-sized manufacturers with NASA Glenn experts. The experts helped identify and evaluate possible solutions for the firm.

“For a company like us, it’s not a matter of getting additional loans and funding,” says company President George Piscsalko says. “It was a matter of getting access to an expert with sophisticated equipment and ability. You can’t buy that easily.”

The collaboration helped the 60-employee firm fast track mass production of the thermal wires.

“This sensor system is now impacting how people build bridge and building foundations across the nation,” according to Paul Bartolotta, senior aerospace engineer at NASA Glenn Research Center.
