If you’re shopping for a TV right now, chances are good it will be a Smart TV–they stream content directly from the internet, but not all Smart TV interfaces are built the same. Here’s everything you need to know when shopping for a Smart TV.

Smart TVs can browse your favorite apps like Netflix, Amazon Video, Youtube, Hulu, and more–some even have web browsers built in. Most content if free, but most apps require a subscription or a pay-per-view system. Also, if you’re going to make streaming 4K Ultra HD content, you should be aware of data caps–those movies use a lot of your data.

There are a wide variety of Smart TV interfaces out there. First is Samsung’s Tizen, which automatically detects what you connect to the TV, labels the input accordingly, and instantly lets you control the device with one remote. LG’s is called WebOS; it’s bubbly, super simple to use, and can be controlled with a motion styled remote. Sony, and many others, use Google’s Android interface, which allows you to use Chromecast, and simply cast whatever you’re watching to your TV. TCLs come with Roku Smart TV interface, which delivers a wide variety of streaming apps and has a great way of pulling results, by pulling from a vast number of streaming sites. TVs like Element and Westinghouse come with Amazon Fire built in, with Alexa’s digital assistance at the ready.
