A Supercomputer Dreamed Up a Bird-Like Airplane Wing

“In a letter published in Nature, Niels Aage and colleagues from the University of Denmark showed off an intricately curved and fractal-like airfoil design that’s strikingly similar to the interior of a bird’s wing and beak.”

What Is a Helicopter?

“A helicopter’s rotors allow it to do things an airplane cannot. Unlike an airplane, a helicopter does not have to move quickly through the air to have lift. That fact means it can move straight up or down. Most airplanes cannot do this. A helicopter can take off or land without a runway.”

“Why bother using the wings at all? Heck you’ve got a mighty jet engine underneath you, just point it at the ground and blast off! Over the years engineers have tried a few different approaches, but the most successful idea was to use thrust vectoring, like on the Boeing AV-8B Harrier II.”
