I love it when the “tactical” crowd hates on Milsurps. They say stuff like “they are just good for collecting dust” or “they are garbage because they have wooden stocks”
The truth is Military surplus rifles (Enfields, Mausers, Mosins, Arisakas, etc) are among the most well made firearms in history and often the most copied designs used in modern rifles. Look at the Winchester Model 70 with it’s controlled feed bolt action operation whose lines are taken directly from the popular German K98 rifle. Many powerful sporting rifles are built on surplus P17 actions with the ears ground off.
We even copied the K98 to make our famous Springfield 1903 rifle.
The 1911 service pistol is probably one of the most copied and reproduced handguns in history and it’s legacy has lasted 100 years and is still going strong.
John Moses Browning, one of the most clever American engineers that ever lived, ended up with over 128 patents that changed the face of the way we see military and civilian firearms to this day. Many of his designs are copied all over the world and for good reason.
His Browning A5 was used by the Air Corps to train gunners on shooting moving targets.
His Remington Model 8 was one of the first semi automatic rifles fielded by the FBI and other LE agencies and was one of the firearms used in popular last stand with Bonnie and Clyde.
The list and description could go on for days, but I would encourage you to research historical firearms on your own.
I think that in recent years, Military Surplus rifles have made a big comeback. With the advent of youtube video and other online social media assets, a wider and younger crowd has been drawn to them. Personally, I’ve probably been responsible for the sale of more Mosin Nagant rifles than any person I can think of. Not to ring my own bell or anything.
