Google doesn’t just “see” your street — it can sniff it too.

Street View cars have long roamed streets with cameras; now, some of them are sensing air quality. They’re helping Google and its partner Aclima paint a granular picture of polluted cities, showing which streets suffer the worst pollution.

The cars have collected more than 1 billion points in Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and California’s Central Valley, racking up 100,000 miles. The data will help governments and scientists learn where pollution collects locally, so they can improve air quality for everyone.
