We had to. Has my obsession with Batman gone too far?

After all the red hot knife videos, we decided to try a different approach. Using both a transformer for resistive heating (video on that here: and an induction heating setup, we heat up metal much more efficiently than using a propane torch.

But to keep it interesting, we bust out the batarangs we made last year in a Make it Real project ( and see how much damage a RED HOT BATARANG could do a target. We test it on bread, butter, a melon, a foam board — and even flesh.

To show the true temperature of the batarang we also use a thermal camera to check the temperature — unfortunately it’s even too hot for the thermal camera to read! During a few of our tests we melted the batarangs, and since stainless steel has a melting point of around 1450C, or nearly 2500F — it’s safe to say these are the HOTTEST red hot knife videos around.

Thanks for watching and don’t forget to check out our other MAKE IT REAL projects where we take fictional ideas from movies, comics, and video games — and make real working prototypes. Just like these batarangs.
