We use a lot of large and heavy 37mm balls (from a radial bearing) and used some strong magnets as spokes and bearing points. The magnets are strong enough to prevent the thing from flying apart even though it is turning at a pretty decent speed. The total weight of this with the 9 balls is over 4lbs. (1825g)

It’s been raining here so I decided to shoot some indoor stuff.
You will notice that each ball repels the other balls and creates an air gap between the balls. If the poles were opposite, the balls would be attracted to each other and cause a lot more friction and the thing would not turn very well- and actually come to a halt almost immediately.
