Getting older and need glasses? Prepare for “Sticker Shock”!04:33

PLEASE READ. Not to take away from the talented technicians who work on lenses, as I’ve seen how eyeglasses are made and the machinery to do it, but frame makers take note. I also have been to the Akai and Sansui Factory’s in Japan, and saw how they make their products. But the high eye glasses prices are still a mystery to me. I know optical glass is expensive, but clear acrylics, etc (In this day and age with all the extremely sophisticated assembly and manufacturing facilities we have) plus computers figuring it all out, you would think by now the price of eyeglasses would come down like other items of extreme technology. At least the frames!
Other technologies also have complication of assembly, many more parts, and need lots of manpower to assemble.
But even with all the “lens blanks” that have already been manufactured and only needing ground by computer and fitting to your frames, the prices still go up!

What happened to our pricing? Seems to me that eyeglasses and frames are like printer ink. Outrageous! And if they can make perfectly good frames for only $2 in China, why can’t we get them at our eye doctors, or even at Shopko which is a discount dept store!?

I’ve no insurance and still have to see like many of you. But even for progressive lenses, the price seems a bit high to me and all my glasses wearing friends.
