This video shows a time-lapse of a “square spiral” maneuver made by NASA’s P-3 research aircraft over a relatively uniform field of low clouds on Aug. 24, 2017. About 10 minutes elapse in the span of this video. The P-3 was deployed on NASA’s Observations of Aerosols above Clouds and their Interactions, or ORACLES, field campaign, which is making measurements of clouds and tiny, airborne particles called aerosols. Aerosols can have both cooling and warming effects on Earth’s temperature and climate. Scientists are studying them in the field to better understand their behavior, and the data they collect will be used to improve climate models.
