The fight against ISIS in Iraq is now centered on the Diyala Province, a the region of Iraq extending northeast of Baghdad until the Iranian border. The Iraqi army, along with Shia militias funded by Iran, have been struggling to push the ISIS militants out of the region for months. Vocativ’s Lindsey Snell and Jake Simkin went to the combat zone in the town of Muqdadiyah. They toured the frontlines with the Badr Organization, a Shia militia fighting ISIS across Iraq, and dodged ISIS snipers who advanced during the course of their visit.
