Conducting cancer research in the microgravity environment of the International Space Station offers unique insight into the genetic and cellular processes that can’t be duplicated on Earth. Luis Zea, a research associate at BioServe Space Technologies, explains that cells grown in space arrange themselves into three-dimensional groupings, or aggregates, which more closely resemble what happens in the body. Such research could help scientists pinpoint the cellular changes that cause cancer, potentially leading to new treatments that enhance the quality of life for patients or potentially develop preventive measures.
