Fenix LD20: Everything Torch Improved!

Upgraded and improved, the Fenix LD20 is an evolutionary progession of the still-excellent but discontinued Fenix L2D AA-cell flashlight. The L2D has proven itself to be a reliable and bright lighting companion for me and my associates for many months now. Its successor, the LD20, builds on its proven formula of a sensible User Interface (UI), an efficient and bright Cree 7090 XR-E LED, excellent build quality, and a small and lightweight form factor that can fit into any system (LE, Civ, Mil, Medical, Firefighter, etc). Weighing only 3.2 ounces with rechargeable Sanyo Eneloop cells (and even lighter with lithium AAs!), the LD20 is an invisible carry along until you need it. Improvements over the L2D include better knurling, protective ears on the tail cap, elongated lanyard slots on tail cap, anti-roll bezel, and an improved reflector that projects the beam further with more culmination. Extensive water testing in the new “Nutnfancy Water Barrel” (NWB!) at 3 ft depth, in both dynamic and static conditions, showed the Fenix LD20 to be completely watertight and fully operative underwater. Ergos on the light remain friendly: a slender barrel is easy to grasp and find in the dark, it carries well, and lends itself to a
cigar hold for combat pisolcraft. Versatility is superb and Model shown is a regular LD20 and the LD20 Plus features a useful pocket clip. Other upsides include: fits in a military flight suit knife pocket, can function as a kubaton defensive tool, waterproof to IPX-8 standards, quality construction throughout, glass lens with AR coating, numerous included accessories (belt carry case, lanyard, o-rings, and switch cap cover), tactile click switch that’s easy to manipulate in cold or loud conditions, recessed switch (allows vertical standing of the light for lantern use), well-culminated beam with no artifacts (brighter than Nitecore D20), and some very useful accessories like a diffuser tip, wand extension, headband (reviewed), and bike light mount (all purchased separately). It’s these accessories that enable the Fenix L2D to replace many other lighting products and still provide the same or even improved performance. The LD20 modes replicate those of other Fenix lights with some run time/level variances: Low @ 9 Lumens for 71 hrs, Med @ 47 Lumens for 13 hrs, High @ 94 Lumens for 5 hrs, and Turbo/Stobe Modes @ 180 Lumens for 2 hrs (mfr data, other avail. online from different sources). Compared to the L2D, the LD20 beam provides a more precise hotspot and useful spill bill (w/o any meaningful corona distractions) beam due to its more finely textured reflector. It throws farther without beam degradation; probably the biggest improvement over the L2D light. It also tends towards the cool blue coloration vs the slightly greener tints of some previous Fenix models. The LD20 is another solid win by Fenix: a high value, compact, lightweight, tough, bright, multi-mode lighting tool that will enhance your system effectiveness. There are other great light choices out there but it seems the Fenix LD20 will holds its ground against all competitors.
