Early Hovercraft Toy04:33

Dating from 1991, this is quite an early example of a hovercraft toy. The design is quite nice, with the power unit just having a push fit into the base, which makes access to the batteries very easy. However the batteries are part of the problem, as the weight of 2 AA batteries is difficult for the toy to lift.

I am no expert on small electric motors, but I suspect that modern ones are lighter and more powerful, and – even more importantly – most flying toys these days use rechargeable capacitors, which are incredibly light, which makes it much easier for the toy to lift off, since it weighs so little.

A lot of developments have happened in 22 years!
