Wenger 73115 Swiss Army Officers Watch, Std Issue [shown]:

A big fan of the Gen I LR-308, we were looking forward to the design improvements of the “GII” or 2nd Gen LR-308 AR-10 by DPMS. Supposedly lighter, more compact, it now has a redesigned monolithic bolt carrier and forged receivers; it is widely lauded as an improvement. Most reviews online are glowing. We took the GII Recon out to find out. Shooting included Desert RunNGun and range work. Accuracy was outstanding and upholds the tradition of the LRT-308. The trigger was excellent with light pull, clean break. SAWC was unimpressive. Reliability was representative of recent AR-10 testing in TNP: many stoppages were encountered with all magazines and both high quality brass and steel loads. The gun was properly lubed but we don’t make time to troubleshoot the issue. We do feel this might be an anomaly of this sample of GII and could probably be fixed. But with reliable/accurate out of the box options like the Bushmaster XM10 or S&W M&P10, why bother. The quad rail for instance needs to go and is an obsolete, cost saving holdover. The Recon needs modifications to make it competitive. Perhaps the best version for GTW would be the GII MOE with its lighter weight and better muzzle brake. If reliable, this version would be recommended, even with its lighter profile barrel.
