Lisa Gade reviews the 2017 refresh of Dell’s excellent XPS 15, a traditional laptop (not convertible) that’s clad in metal and is very thin and light at 4.5 lb./ 2 kg. The exterior, keyboard, trackpad and display options are the same as last year’s model, but the internals have been updated with Intel 7th generation 45 watt quad core Kaby Lake CPUs and NVIDIA GTX 1050 4GB GDDR5 dedicated graphics (the lowest end $999 model has just Intel HD 630 graphics). The laptop is available with a matte non-touch full HD display and a 4K Sharp IGZO panel with full Adobe RGB color gamut. Dell has added a fingerprint scanner for this generation.

The laptop runs Windows 10 and it has two RAM slots for 32 gigs max DDR4 RAM, a PCIe NVMe SSD and Killer 1535AC WiFi with Bluetooth. The base model has a boot HDD and a 56 WHr battery, while the more expensive models ship with the PCIe SSD and a 97 WHr battery. We look at a fairly high end configuration with the Intel Core i7-770HQ CPU, 16 GB RAM, a 512 gig SSD, 4K display that sells for $2,000.
