We just recently got our Christmas Tree and I decided it would be cool to 3D print Christmas Ornaments for our tree using the Ultimaker 3D printer. I recently installed the Duel Extrusion head so I decided to try printing some flakes in one color and other flakes in another color without having to change material. You have to hack the GCODE to tell it to use the 2nd head since CURA only uses it when you combine models together but it’s easy to do using notepad.

I chose the model @ by Roman Hegglen because it’s a simple but detailed design that is completely flat so I could run the Ultimaker at break-neck speed. When printed using clear filament it makes a very convincing snow color with a shimmer to it that is very nice and looks fantastic on the tree.

I hung the ornaments using standard metal hooks you would use for hanging any other Christmas ornaments and they worked perfectly! When I scaled the models down to %50 the hole was too small so I had to loop the hook though the center but it still looked fantastic when hung on the tree.

I am going to make this a new family tradition to 3D print ornaments every year for the tree but next year I’m going to do some lithographs of my family and put battery powered LED’s behind them so when hung on the tree they light up with our faces (stay tuned for 2014 and remind me if I forget).

The filament I used was from PrintedSolid.com and is made by ColorFabb. It’s a PLA/PHA printed at 220 degrees and the layer height was 0.2 if you want to reproduce my exact results. I sliced all the models using CURA and they turned out amazing.

The collision near the end of the video knocking one item off the build platform was due to me hand editing the GCODE to use the 2nd print head without accounting for the printing thinking it was using the forward most print head and bumping the model (oops). CURA would not do this so I hope they eventually add a feature to choose which print head you want to use for a single print.

I really hope you enjoyed this video and I hope it motivates you to print your own Ornaments for your Christmas tree. Just like snow flakes no two are exactly alike!
